Serve inventory from disk when it doesn't fit in memory

Design a service that answers inventory lookups from data that lives on disk because it is too large to keep in memory. Cover the on-disk layout and index, what you cache in memory, how updates are applied, read and write latency, and how the service scales to more data and traffic.
