Explore a friend graph through a remote API with few calls

You cannot read a social graph directly; the only access is get_friends(user_id), a remote call that returns a user's friends and costs a network round trip. Write code that explores the network from a starting user (for example to find everyone within a few hops) while making as few calls as possible. Discuss caching, batching, parallel calls and what happens when calls fail.
